Discipline Vs. Motivation

Are you going to cowboy (or cowgirl) up or are you going to wait in the truck? You better choose to saddle up to your goals and dreams because we only get one ride in life!!! Get disciplined! Discipline, not motivation, is where it's at!

Motivation is a fickle friend. You won't ALWAYS be motivated. I'm all about motivation and feeding the mind with motivational thoughts; however, I'm more concerned about building discipline.

Why?

Discipline is Consistent

The consistency of discipline is what makes it discipline. You go out and do it, day after day. You brush your teeth and shower daily whether you "feel" like it or not and you certainly do it whether you "have time" or not. Be just as disciplined concerning your exercise habits.

Discipline Is Habitual

Discipline doesn’t just “happen.” It’s intentional and it’s repeated. Every. Single. Day.

Discipline Requires Action

Discipline doesn’t sound like fun, but it’s how you see results.

Motivation is the start, but if it’s not solidified into a discipline, it usually fades away into regret pretty quickly once you realize you never ACTED on it.

How To Be More Disciplined:

Get Rid Of Your Excuses

I'll say it again. Get rid of them...every...single...one...of them! We ALL are busy. We all have our own unique challenges. We all have hurdles.

"You're either changing your life or you're not. No waiting for this or that or better weather or other hurdles. Hurdles are the change." -- Terri Guillemets

Hurdles are opportunities to build will power just as exercise builds the body.

We either choose to listen to our excuses and limitations or decide that we are stronger, wiser and can overcome any challenge and obstacle in our way.

Create Routines

Don’t leave it to chance. When you discipline yourself, it’s like operating on auto pilot. You just do it. There’s no more emotion involved. It’s simply “if this…then that.”

That’s why a plan of attack is so crucial. You don’t have to decide what you want to do every single day when you wake up. You don’t have 100 different decisions points. You decide once to follow the plan and then wake up every morning and reference said plan.

You’ve already decided you’re going to do it. You don’t have to decide anymore, you just have to do it..

Guess what! If you're in one of my MUSC fitness groups, then HCC or WWF has already created a routine for you. You just have to SHOW UP!!!! If it's a priority, then you'll be there! Our priorities dictate our actions. It's that simple. I pull 10-12 hours a day regularly and you won't catch me missing my workouts because my training goals are a priority. Determine what's most important to you and act upon it...follow your plan...STICK TO YOUR ROUTINE.

Keep Going

When you really, really, really want to give up, don’t stop. Keep going. Discipline doesn’t depend on your feelings. It happens whether or not you “feel” like it.

When you think you are done, you’re only 40% of what your body is capable of doing. That’s just the limit that we put on ourselves. – David Goggins

Whatever you think your limitation is, know that it is your mind and only your mind that will set you free. Let your mind be your greatest asset, not your greatest enemy.
