Making healthy lifestyle changes to our dietary and exercise habits can feel daunting and overwhelming, so I thought it was important to write a blog on the importance of making these changes through small steps. Often times when we’re faced with making a big change, we may not even know where to begin or how to take that first step, so my hope is that this blog will be a source of inspiration and motivation on the how’s, what’s and why’s of accomplishing big changes to our health through small steps. The key is that we do it in steps, not leaps. Louis Sachar said, “It is better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward.” This quote illustrates perfectly the key to lasting success for accomplishing healthy lifestyle changes. We set ourselves up to be overwhelmed and to ultimately fail when we take on too much too soon at one time. Changing our diets and our exercise habits, cumulatively involves many, many changes; however, we don’t have to change everything at once. The “small steps” involve making small changes to our diet and exercise habits and the “journey” is the accumulation of these “small steps” over time which will ultimately lead to the “destination” which is the goal we are trying to achieve, whether it be weight loss, improvements to our cholesterol /triglyceride/ glucose levels, blood pressure, or increased levels of fitness. We can’t leap from our starting point to our destination in a single bound. We must be patient and realize that these changes take time and must be accomplished incrementally. It’s very similar to placing money in an investment account. The money will not grow overnight, but if we persistently put small amounts into our accounts, then over time, this money will accumulate interest and our investment will grow. It’s much the same with making healthy lifestyle changes. We will not see results overnight, but persistency and the accumulation of small changes to our habits (dietary and exercise habits) will ultimately lead to great changes and big results. Think of these changes as investments in your health rather than sacrifices. Commit to making one small change each week and focus on mastering that change, then make another small change the following week and continue in this manner...transforming your life one small step at a time. What change will you make today?
