Peak performers take risks. I'm not talking about jumping out of airplanes. I'm talking about risking being uncomfortable. I'm talking about risking failure. In general, playing it safe all the time and remaining within our current comfort zone prevents catastrophic failure but also limits the upside of success and growth. Instead of fearing failure and "playing it safe" within one's comfort zone, peak performers consistently look to move beyond their comfort zone and break barriers. Peak performers know that an unsuccessful attempt is not absolute failure but is a rewarding opportunity to grow and learn how to improve and perform better in the future.
Something that amazes me about elite athletes is their consistency. Game after game, the top performers deliver consistent effort and results, regardless of opponent or circumstance. Regardless of your circumstances or opponents in the game of life, you must be consistent. Small disciplines repeated with consistency, day in and day out, lead to great achievements gained slowly over time. Consistency and hard work equal success. Simply put: if you keep going, you'll get there.
This concludes the 7 Vitamin C's of Mental Toughness. Mental toughness is a mindset that I believe can be developed and trained the same way we train the body. You can choose to develop this mindset. You can choose to be a peak performer or a bleak performer. Which will you choose? When training gets hard, keep asking yourself that question. When you make a mistake, ask yourself that question. Remember, being a peak performer is not a once-in-a-while proposition.
You can have results or you can have your excuses. You cannot have both.
Train your mind daily just as you train your body. Strong minds build strong bodies. I believe it's a choice and a disciplined effort to be mentally tough just as it's a choice to be positive or negative. You must choose to be positive, mentally strong and a peak performer DAILY. When you wake up, read over the 7 Vitamin C's as a reminder...post them on your bathroom mirror. YOU CAN be mentally tenacious!
